With the continued threat of local community transmissions caused by the third wave of COVID-19, in Hong Kong, many insurance companies have extended the extra benefits on coronavirus to their existing and new customers. Back in April this year a few insurers including AIA, AXA, China Life, Cigna, Prudential and FWD launched some free COVID-19 coverage even for non-customers, without requiring them to purchase an insurance policy (see Note 1). However most of the offers have expired. Now with the renewed threat of increasing local COVID-19 cases, are there any insurers still offering free COVID-19 coverage? 10Life has discovered a few remaining free offers.

Currently (as of July 22nd) only AIA, Blue, Cigna and Generali are still providing free COVID-19 coverage. AIA and Cigna’s offers are for the general public. The AIA free COVID-19 coverage includes diagnosis benefit (HK$15,000) and death benefit (HK$150,000). You need to download the “AIA Connect” app and register. There is a quota of 1m, and coverage can be extended to up to two children. The Cigna offer is even more convenient as you only need to register on their website. Upon hospitalisation due to COVID-19, you get a monthly cash benefit of HK$10,000 for 3 months. Meanwhile Generali offers registrants a COVID-19 diagnosis coverage of HK$5,000.

Blue’s free coverage offer is targeting Hong Kong residents who are most negatively affected by COVID-19, including the unemployed and those working in the affected industries such as travel, retail and food services. The offer is a one-year free term life insurance with sum assured of HK$250,000. And as an insured you would get a COVID-19 diagnosis coverage of HK$10,000.

From the insurance companies’ risk management perspective, given the current third wave of confirmed cases in Hong Kong and the continued outbreaks around the world, it is uncertain how large the potential claim amounts would be. If the situation gets out of control, it can become an enormous cost for the insurers. As an estimate, if say 5,000 of the insured get diagnosed for COVID-19 within the coverage period, the cost to AIA would be HK$75m (without counting any death benefits). Only insurers with strong financial positions and risk appetite can take such risks. On the other hand, we believe the insurance companies have high confidence in the discipline of Hong Kong people to fight against the pandemic together and contain the risks.

  1. As of April 29th 2020, AIA, AXA, China Life, Cigna, Prudential and FWDwere offering free COVID-19 coverage (details in the table below).
